Geotechnical Engineer
Intermountain Materials Testing (IMT) is a full service construction materials testing, special inspection and geotechnical engineering firm serving clients throughout the Inland Northwest from offices in Spokane Valley and Pasco, Washington. We are interested in receiving applications for the position of Geotechnical Engineer/Engineering Manager. The position may be based out of either of our offices and will involve performing work in both areas.
The following, general job description is intended to describe most of the duties that the position will involve:
- Technical Manager/Director of Testing and Inspection Services- Many, relevant, applicable codes and standards that IMT operates in accordance with suggest or require that the operation be under the direction of a full time, registered engineer charged with overall managerial responsibility for technical services. These standards include ASTM E 329, C 1077, D 3666, D 3740, WABO 1701, and ISO 17025 as well as many project specifications. The Engineering Manager will be expected to work with the Construction Services Manager, Business Manager, Administrative Manager and Laboratory Supervisor to assure that the work is being performed and reported in accordance with the Quality Manual. This oversight includes all aspects of technical operations including technician training and qualification, equipment, performance of tests and inspections and reporting the results.
- Geotechnical and Materials Engineering- The engineering manager will be responsible for performing and directing the performance of these services. It is expected that, initially pending further growth, the engineering manager will perform most or all of the geotechnical engineering work.
- Engineering Business & Development- The engineering manager will work with the business manager to develop the business aspects of engineering programs and market services. This will include researching potential projects, client development, and preparing proposals, bids and estimates to provide service. The engineering manager will advise the business manager on the various, business related, engineering issues to assure the proper performance of service and minimize loss and liability.
- Laboratory Services Development- The engineering manager will be responsible for adding tests to IMT’s scope of laboratory tests provided based on their experience. This will include researching equipment prices and assisting the business manager with purchasing necessary equipment and supplies, preparing the laboratory and equipment for testing, performing tests and training laboratory technicians to perform or assist in performance of tests.
The successful applicant will meet the following minimum qualifications among others:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering or related field.
- Current Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Washington
- 5 years of experience working for a geotechnical or materials testing firm
- Current, valid Washington Driver's License

Supervising Laboratory Technician
We are currently accepting resumes from qualified individuals to fill the position of Supervising Laboratory Technician at the Spokane and Pasco offices. The position is full time. Responsibilities include overall responsibility of production in the materials laboratory including performance of laboratory tests, supervision of laboratory staff, calibration of test equipment, coordination of testing priorities and schedules, and coordination with construction and geotechnical services management.
At a minimum, the following certifications are preferred:
NICET Certified Construction Materials Testing Technician, Level III, subfields Soils, Concrete & HMA
ACI Certified Strength Testing Technician, Aggregate Testing Technician & Grade 1 Laboratory Testing Technician
Additional certification in materials testing or inspection is preferred. Experience managing a construction materials testing laboratory in a production environment is preferred. The successful candidate will possess exceptional written and verbal communication skills and shall have demonstrated leadership ability. A high school diploma is required and an associate degree in civil engineering technology or related field is prefered. A valid Washington state driver's license with a clean driving record is required.

Special Inspector/Field Testing Technician
We are currently accepting resumes from qualified candidates for the positions of field technicians and special inspectors at the Spokane and Pasco offices. Responsibilities will include collecting samples, performing field tests and conducting inspections on soils, aggregates, reinforcing steel, concrete, masonry, fireproofing and structural steel. Successful candidates will possess one or more of the following certifications:
ICC certification as a special inspector of soils, reinforced concrete, structural masonry, spray applied fireproofing, structural steel & bolting and structural welding.
AWS certification as a certified welding inspector (CWI)
ACI certified Field Testing Technician, Grade 1
Nuclear gauge safety training
Additional certification in materials testing or inspection is preferred. Experience performing tests or inspections on one or more of the indicated construction materials is required. The successful candidate will possess exceptional written and verbal communication skills. A high school diploma is required and an associate degree in civil engineering technology or related field is preferred. A valid Washington state driver's license with a clean driving record is required.
